14 Months!

Sorry for the lapse in posting recently. I'm having trouble remembering to take the camera with us, and I do love posting pictures with a story rather than just words. Maybe I'll embark on one of the 'picture a day' type of blogs i've seen done and see if i can't remember to take and post more pictures.

Anyway, just an update on Colin's activities lately. We've been enjoying the warmish spring we've been having. It has been so warm that highs in the 50s and 60s feel cold... which just isn't normal. We just finished the warmest March on record, and we've been enjoying the time outdoors! Colin's new favorite thing is to bring us his shoes, have us put them on (he'll try if we wait too long - he's really not good at it yet, he knows they go on his feet, but has no concept of how to get his foot or the shoe oriented correctly), then run to the baby gate so that he can go outside. The boy loves to explore! We're excited that he'll be a kid that likes to be outside and play as that is good for any kid :) He's also mastering stairs. He can crawl up our full flight of stairs all by himself (with supervision of course), but does not like to crawl down backwards. He insists on standing up and going down forwards - so it may be awhile before he can go on his own...

I also started some seeds for a garden this summer! Given that we live in a townhouse and have no 'yard' for a garden, I am gardening in a community garden up in Maplewood. They have 15'x15' plots for your individual/family use - so i'm going to plant a vegetable garden! They have water spouts and donate vegetables twice weekly to the food shelters if you want to contribute. The gardens open around May 1st, so that should give my seeds a nice head start :) Can't wait to have Colin 'help'!

Colin turned 14 months yesterday. He's growing like a weed and seems heavier by the day. He is also starting to work on some new teeth which look to be located on his bottom jaw - so probably his 15 month molars. I've heard molars are a lot of fun, so here we go! He is understanding most things that come out of our mouths, and is slowly working at forming his own words, but still just seems to be a lot of random noise - dadadada, mamamama, nananana, etc. At least we've progressed to multiple syllables for the most part; just can't say that he has any words yet.

Colin had a lot of fun at his cousin's 5th birthday party this past weekend. It was very loud in there, and he was the youngest by a couple years, but he handled it pretty well and played with toys, both by himself and with some help from the other kids occasionally. Mostly he just watched all the craziness :)

Colin has also had some new sensory experiences lately. We put together a bean bin (full of dried beans) that he likes to play with. He recently tasted ice cream for the first time (cookie monster from The Creamery on Grand). He also played with playdough. With both the beans and playdough, it took several minutes for him not to attempt to eat the item, but we did have success in playing with those items. He really likes playdough and it is kind of hard to wrestle it away from him when he starts becoming too messy with it and it needs to be put away. Oh well - I love that he is becoming a toddler and can play with more sensory items!
