According to one of our baby books, there are about 5 different types of infant feeding behaviors:
- The Barracuda
- The Excited Ineffective
- The Procrastinator
- The Gourmet
- The Rester
We, my friends, have a barracuda baby. Here is the description "This little guy attacks the breast and gets down to business. Mom's nipples sometimes pay the price for this style. Be prepared." (Fields and Brown, Baby 411) Our barracuda has definitely taken its toll on his momma. Of course, there are also good things about being a barracuda. At our lactation consult yesterday, we found out that our little guy was already over his birth weight! He weighed 7 lbs 2 oz., a full ounce over his birth weight. Babies normally take more like two weeks to reach this point, so being a barracuda has definitely worked in his favor. The bad news is the toll on momma. Without getting into the details, let's just say that we got the go ahead yesterday to exclusively pump from one breast for 36 hrs so that momma gets a little break from the barracuda and has a chance to heal. The other breast is just hanging on, so we're just hoping that they toughen up sooner rather than later.
Other reports from the lactation consultant were good. He might have just the slightest touch of jaundice, but his color is very good. He is eating well and gaining weight, and as the nurse asked for a scream to check his lungs, he was happy to oblige and show her the full scale of his abilities.
We have a wellness exam on Wednesday, so we will post again concerning his stats, but for now, he is a thriving baby and we are enjoying him (especially during the day time hours)!
